Place is a collaborative project and social experiment hosted on the social networking site Reddit that began on April Fools' Day 2017 and was revived again after 5 years on April Fools' Day 2022. The experiment involves an online canvas located at a subreddit called r/place, which registered users could edit by changing the color of a single pixel from a 16-color palette. r/place has officially ended. This plugin will now retire and maybe return if there ever is a third r/place. A timelapse function has been added that displays the complete history of the 2022 r/place event. Huge thanks to https://rplace.space/ (u/risson67, u/prosto_sanja) for the data!

To enable timelapse mode do the following:

Download the latest release
Make sure you have at least one 16 x 16 screen
Put the new config contents into your minecraft-place/config.yml and set timelapse.enable to true
Restart your server

How it works

The plugin connects to a Reddit websocket that controls the canvas. After authenticating the plugin is able to subscribe to canvas updates.

Installation

This plugin only works on 1.16.5 - 1.18.2 servers!

Download the plugin here
Drop the plugin into your plugins folder
Download the latest experimental maps release and drop it into your plugins folder
Restart your server
Open plugins/minecraft-place/config.yml
Edit the credentials and save
1. See 'How to create a Reddit app' if you don't know how to get a client id and secret
Restart your server again
Build a 16 by 16 rectangle and place item frames (like this)
Go to the lower left corner, look into the middle of the lower left itemframe and type /maps createscreen
Done! (Optional: Restart your server one last time)

Please note: The plugin will wait 10 seconds before rendering r/place after startup.

How to create a Reddit app

Go to https://www.reddit.com/prefs/apps
At the bottom click 'create an app' / 'create another app'
Choose a random name, it doesn't matter
Select the 'script' type
Choose a random description, about url and redirect url

It should look like this:

Now create the app and copy the id and secret.

r/place has ended and this plugin will retire (for now). A new timelapse mode has been added, please see the README note on how to set it up.

New config contents:

timelapse:
  enable: false # True if a timelapse of r/place should be displayed
  delay-in-seconds: 1 # Turn this up if you experience lags
  skip: 8 # The amount of images that should be skipped (1 if zero should be skipped)
  show-time: true # True if the image timestamp should be drawn in the middle of the screen
