What is SpriteCaster?

SpriteCaster allows you to convert modern minecraft textures for release versions into texture packs compatible with older versions. It essentially allows you to backport resource packs.

For example, if you wanted to play Minecraft Beta 1.7.3 using Faithless, you're out of luck since Faithless is a new resource pack and didn't exist back in beta. SpriteCaster allows you to convert Faithless, or any modern resource pack to Beta 1.7.3, or any old version.

Planned Features

These are some of the planned features of SpriteCaster

  • Support for any pre-release Minecraft version.
  • Support for custom sound files.
  • Animated water, lava, fire, portals.

    The bed item sprite was removed from Minecraft in release and replaced by model rendering. SpriteCaster needs to provide the old item sprite as a fallback for resource packs which don't provide an item sprite, as very few do.

    Ideally this will be implemented by creating a fallback resource pack and adding it to the default ResourcePackStack.
